Tangalle Market (Google Maps) is conveniently located near the Tangalle bus stand, about 5 km or a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from Aliya Watunu Hena. Despite its modest size, the market is a genuinely busy place — fresh fruits, vegetables, curd, salted fish, and local foods spread across stalls run by people who've been selling here for years.
The fruit stalls are a good starting point. Rows of ripe mangoes, fragrant pineapples, and papayas. Don't miss the chance to try lesser-known local fruits: rambutan, mangosteen, and jackfruit are worth asking about.
No visit to Tangalle Market is complete without trying Sri Lankan curd — locally known as mee kiri. Made from buffalo milk, it's served with treacle (palm syrup) or jaggery (cane sugar). Creamy, slightly tangy, and completely different from anything you'd find at home.
The vendors here are friendly and direct. Most are happy to offer samples and talk about what they're selling. Ask questions — the conversations are often the best part.
