Depart just after sunrise. The drive inland takes you away from the coast gradually — the air cools, the landscape changes. By the time the road begins to climb into the hills, you're in different Sri Lanka: tea-covered slopes, mist in the valleys, light that falls differently at altitude.
Arrival in Ella & First Views
You'll arrive in Ella by mid-morning — a small mountain town nestled in rolling tea plantations, known for its walks, its tea, and the famous view from the Nine Arches Bridge. The bridge is a colonial-era stone viaduct set deep in tea-covered hills. Especially good when the train crosses it, framed by forest and green. Take time for a walk around, enjoy a drink at a viewpoint café, and take in the depth of the view.
Hike to Little Adam's Peak
From Ella, a gentle trail winds through tea bushes and forest up to Little Adam's Peak — accessible, rewarding, and with sweeping views of the valley below. That 'mountain escape' feeling without full-blown expedition. As the cool mountain breeze greets you at the summit, take your time before heading back down.
Back to Ella for lunch. There are good local rice-and-curry spots and a handful of international cafés. Take your time — afternoons at altitude are for slowing down.
Post-lunch, consider visiting a local tea factory for a look at Sri Lanka's famous production process. Guided tours often include tastings.
Homeward Bound
As the day turns, the journey back to Unakuruwa begins. Consider a stop at a waterfall or lookout on the way down. As you descend toward the coast, the salt air returns and the light softens.
You'll arrive back in the early evening — tired in the best possible way, full of new memories, ready for a calm dinner by the beach.
