A day on the southern coast — Galle

The southern coast road is worth the drive on its own. The route takes you west from Unakuruwa, past Tangalle and along the coastline — traditional villages, glimpses of the ocean, the landscape shifting as you get further from home.

Your day begins at 8:30. A half-hour drive brings you to the Wewurukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya, a significant Buddhist temple in Dikwella — home to one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka at 50 meters, with murals depicting the Buddha's life and a history dating back to the Kandyan Kingdom period. A place of genuine calm and cultural depth.

The next stop is Dondra Head Lighthouse at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Built during the British colonial period in 1889, this 54-meter-tall structure is the tallest lighthouse in the country, with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. The drive also takes you past Mirissa Beach and Coconut Tree Hill — a well-known stretch of coastline with good views south toward the sea.

Galle Fort

Arriving in Galle by midday, you'll have time for lunch before exploring the fort. The old Dutch fort dates to the 16th century — originally built by the Portuguese, extensively fortified by the Dutch, and inhabited continuously ever since. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings, boutiques, cafés, and views from the ramparts over the Indian Ocean.
